Computer game enthusiast Barton Everton wanted to create a new type of games controller but didn't know how. He wanted to design and build a wireless, single-hand use games controller compatible with the new generation of games consoles like the Play Station 3 and the Xbox 360. Peter Ives of Business Dynamix helped to mentor Barton (now the Managing Director of the newly formed company GIEvolution) and identified grant funding from the LDA's Jumpstart Connect programme. Business Dynamix introduced GIEvolution to Innovation Valley and the services of Innovation for Business. Innovation for Business working through Middlesex University's Department of Product Design and Engineering took up the challenge of developing a fully functional prototype within twelve weeks and a budget of £20,000. They succeeded and the result was an innovative and beautifully designed product and importantly new intellectual property for which a patent has been filed.

The Department of Product Design, Middlesex University and its associate partners undertook the following work:

  • Formed and ran user focus groups
  • Undertook ergonomic studies
  • Developed concepts
  • Used 'Rapid Prototyping' (RP) technology to reduce the development time
  • Undertook product design using CAD
  • Provided interface design
  • Wrote the software and programmed the PCB
  • Undertook product and user testing
